California Section of Pacific Crest Trail

Anza Borrego  (Image on page 17)

I liken the desert to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. For about 10 months out of the year the desert is an inhospitable Mr. Hyde but for the other 2 months it is an inviting gracious Dr Jekyll. It was early July when I was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail through this section of the Anza Borrego Desert and already the desert was taking on a harsh demeanor. In fact,  I hitchhiked around part of the Anza Borrego because the previous day I ran out of water. However, I vowed to return the following April when Dr Jekyll would be in residence and this photograph is the result. The lens was a 24mm stopped down to f 22 to maximize the depth of field with a 2 stop split field neutral density filter on a tripod of coarse.

The Ilfochrome Classic ( formerly known as Cibachrome) printing process was used to make this color print from the original transparency I shot.  This process is known for it's brilliant color saturation, and high image sharpness which highlights the effect of the god rays in the background.  This print has a ultra-glossy, almost glasslike appearance.

Dawn's Light Touch (Image on page 5)

This photograph of a lakelet on Bighorn Plateau in Sequoia National Park is a case of second time being a charm. I had made a similar photograph two years prior and was intrigued with how the dawns first light crept over the far ridge, however, a brisk wind chopped the water negating any reflection. Upon my return trip I had to hike a long day previously in order to be at this spot to capture the setting moon at sunrise. I awoke with excitement to calm and cloudless skies, set my camera on the tripod with a 35-70mm lens and commenced to photograph the dawn awakening.  It is rare that a scene matches my best intentions so this was a

 pleasant surprise.

 Spring Dogwoods

These dogwood blossoms in Castle Crags State Park California remind me of popcorn. The previous week was unusually warm for early April and just like popcorn the dogwood blossoms were "popping" open. It snowed the day I took this photograph, which halted the popping long enough to allow me to take the photograph.  Just kidding about the last part.  It is also one of my wife's all time favorite photos.  Regrettably, the fine detail of the tree lichen is lost in this sample scan.

Castle Crags (Image on page 88)

The day prior I had hiked my boots off to get to this spot on the Pacific Crest Trail in order to photograph the moonrise over Castle Crags. It was actually the evening before the official full moon which I find is often the preferable evening to photograph because there is still sufficient light on the landscape and the moon still appears full. In this case, however, as I set up my camera in a state of semi exhaustion I was uninspired by the moonrise which appeared washed out in the evening haze, so I gladly decided to rest the entire next day and hope the official full moon would be more inspiring. My hopes were realized and my patience rewarded and my muscles were well rested. This photograph is dedicated to the memory of Milt Kenny, a trail angel from Castella, Ca.

  Moonset  (Image on page 89)

While hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in the Marble Mountain Wilderness of California I was just about at my planned camp when I noticed the setting moon crescent appeared to be perched on the ridge balanced compositionally with the lone tree. I quickly set up my camera gear only to see the moon slip behind the ridge. Fortunately if I moved my tripod up the slope I could reset the scene. Unfortunately the slope was steep. When photographing the moon through a 200mm lense one appreciates how fast the earth is spinning. I had to move up the slope several times to reset this photograph. I exposed off the dusk sky and bracketed, 2/3 of a stop under was the ideal exposure.

Shasta Dawn  (Image on page 93)

I took this photograph while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. I remember being particularly exhausted during this stretch of the trail so just getting out of my warm sleeping bag an hour before sunrise was my biggest challenge here. This photograph of a distant Mt Shasta over Smith Lake is an intriguing juxtaposition of the cool color of the lake versus the warm colors of morning fog over Shasta Valley. Taken with a Nikor 35-70 2.8 lens on a Nikon F3 on a Gitzo tripod with Fuji Velvia film.

Oregon Section of the Pacific Crest Trail

Reeds in Blue

If you enjoy photography and you happen upon grasses in calm water hopefully you have plenty of time, film, mosquito repellent and a tripod because the possibilities for interesting compositions are nearly endless.   I find the over-all effect of the finished print to be soothing.  The metallic blue water pulls the viewer in to explore the scenery beneath the surface.  This particular composition was made in Island Lake in the Sky Lakes Wilderness, Oregon.

Storm Brewing (Image on page 107)

This electrical storm over Mt Jefferson was the most amazing natural phenomena I have ever witnessed. I actually hiked into this location with the idea of photographing the moonrise. By afternoon clouds were gathering but nothing threatening, by evening this thunderhead was expanding at a phenomenal rate. As the setting sun illuminated the boiling clouds I was trying to remain calm enough to photograph the scene but was wary of the not so distant lightening. I went through an entire roll of 36 exposure Fuji Velvia with my 35 -70mm lens set at f22 for 8 seconds hoping to catch a lightening bolt. While several frames had lightening this one worked best compositionally. The unfortunate results of this evening were wildfires which burned for weeks throughout the Cascade Range. But then fire is part of the balance of nature.

Olallie

I'm always fascinated with clouds, so these playful wisps over Mt Jefferson Oregon quickly caught my attention. While they appeared innocent at 9 a.m. they were actually harbingers of a massive evening thunder storm which can be seen in the photograph titled Storm Brewing. The name Olallie is from nearby Lake Olallie which I presume is aboriginal for heaven. Then again it may be the name of Buck Olallie's mining claim, I just like the name. For this shot I used a rotating polarizing filter on a 35-70 zoom lense to accentuate the wisps.

Punch Bowl Falls (Similar to image on page 111)

It was a typical April day in the Columbia River Gorge when I took this photograph. That is to say it was raining. The rain brought several advantages. Firstly, I was the only person present so I didn't have to grab a number and stand in line. Secondly, the rain helped create an ethereal atmosphere which complimented the scene. Gear info; 35-70 Nikor lense, Nikon F3 camera, Gitzo tripod and Fuji film.

Washington State Section of Pacific Crest Trail

Panther Creek

In this autumnal scene I was attempting to capture the sense of changing seasons along the river of time. Whether I was successful conveying that premise is debatable but it's fun to think I was. This photograph was taken from the Pacific Crest Trail bridge over Panther Creek in Washington State. I used a Nikon 80-200 telephoto lense on a Nikon F3 camera on a Gitzo tripod at f 22 for 4 seconds.

Mountain Skies

I was in line at a local hardware store ready to purchase bolts to fix a toilet when I saw this incredible cloud floating over Mt Rainier. Rather than wait in the line I put my bolts on a shelf and sped home grabbed my camera gear and drove to a nearby bridge which afforded a grand view of Mt Rainier. By the time I put a 80-200 telephoto lense on my camera and tripod the cloud had drifted off of Rainier and the sunset was turning the sky an array of purples, pinks and magentas. My challenge was cars driving along the bridge caused the camera to vibrate and I only had three exposures remaining. There was just one brief moment with no traffic which allowed this photograph. After that incredible moment I then drove back to the hardware store smiling all the way.

Valhalla (Vertical shot of image on page 128)

Of all my images, this photograph of Lake Valhalla in the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness in Washington State required the most visits to capture the scene to my satisfaction. This quiet October evening was my sixth visit. Lake Valhalla was one of my Dads' favorite hikes in the Cascades so it holds a special place in my heart.

Twilight of the Dawn (Image on page 124)

One of my favorite times to photograph is when conditions are is flux. I hiked for two hours in early morning darkness to get to Waptus Lake in Washington's  Alpine Lakes Wilderness.  I had just put the camera on the tripod when an autumn sun began burning off the morning fog, the effect of lingering fog on the lake and above the trees was as beautiful as it was fleeting.

Cascadia

When photographing a sunrise or a sunset I have found it is worthwhile to turn around and see what is happening behind me as well. That was the case here. I was photographing a sunrise when a mental note reminded me to turn around. This vista over White Pass area of Glacier Peak Wilderness appeared peaceful and inviting in the early morning light so I opted to turn the camera around. A  2-stop neutral density filter was used on a 24mm lense to balance the contrast between the sky and foreground.

Image Lake (Image on page 133)

After photographing Glacier Peak reflected in Image Lake from various perspectives for about 2 hours I went back to my camp and began cooking breakfast when I noticed the peculiar spoke like clouds fanning out from the west. Leaving my breakfast I set up my 35-70mm lens on camera and tripod. I used a Tiffen 2 stop neutral density split field filter to balance the contrast and a circular polarizing filter to enhance the clouds. Afterwards I heartily ate my cold porridge.
